Dear Historians,

Please check out the German Cultural Studies Major if you have an interest in this area. Note that we have quite a few history courses on the approved elective list as well (see list below).

You may attend a launch of the German Cultural Studies major and the Information Session happening this Thursday, May 1, at 5:00 PM in Denny 359. Many students connected to History may have interest in adding German Cultural Studies as a double major—especially considering the number of History courses approved as out-of-department electives<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/docs.google.com/document/d/1Ad9kekzlZG_6smeEhJvN37j-Y866_DFcDke9sMdgZF8/edit?tab=t.0__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!mWS7QutXqLwFcgA3aVocEyd_BFq72wtHTgiHnrEaDC4f011-oiNOHpb66DfABUs5i4GieXXuOL8HlQ$> for this major option.

Students, feel free to work with HAS advising for more information about the major: https://hasc.washington.edu/students/advising-support.

Best,
Tracy and Mark

Subject: German Cultural Studies Major Launch & Information Session
Hello Advising Colleagues,

In case you aren’t already aware, I’m reaching out today to share that the German Studies Department has introduced a new major option: German Studies: Cultural Studies.

This major provides students with intermediate to advanced competency in German, analytical skills, intercultural competence, and the ability to work across disciplines. As opposed to the German Studies major option, the Cultural Studies pathway only requires completion of the second year of German language study (GERMAN 203), making it easier for students pursuing a major in a complimentary field to also complete a degree in German Studies. Full requirements are available on the department’s website here: https://german.washington.edu/german-studies-cultural-studies.

The Humanities Academic Services advising team invites all interested students to attend the German Cultural Studies Information Session on next Thursday, May 1, at 5:00 PM in Denny 359. This information session will take place at the beginning of the German Club’s weekly meeting<https://german.washington.edu/german-club-events>. Professor Jason Groves and I will be presenting a short overview of the major, providing handouts on the major, and answering any student questions. Students can then stay and join the German Club in their meeting activities. Please help spread the word to students!

You are also more than welcome to encourage any students interested in the German Cultural Studies major to connect with Humanities Academic Services advisers by making an appointment<https://hasc.washington.edu/students/advising-support> or emailing has-center at uw.edu<mailto:has-center at uw.edu>.

Best,
Rachel
